Helping Families in Distress:
The Yvette and Arthur Eder Foundation
Whether the cause was Israel, medical research or families
in need, Yvette and Arthur Eder were well known in the New Haven area for
philanthropy. Since their deaths in 2003 and 2006, their daughter, Jill and
granddaughter, Rachel have continued the family legacy of giving and have
become strong supporters of the Tommy Fund for Childhood Cancer.
“My parents both believed in the importance of philanthropy,” Jill Eder said. “At the end of their lives they felt it was important to establish a foundation that would continue good works. The Tommy Fund is an organization with values similar to those of the Yvette and Arthur Eder Foundation.”
Officially, the Yvette and Arthur Eder Foundation’s mission is to help children and their families “in distress” who have been affected by a life-altering event such as cancer and to enable them to enjoy their future.
Jill especially likes that all donations go quickly and directly to families without a lot of red tape. The Tommy Fund is run mostly by volunteers and almost every dollar raised goes directly to help families pay their mortgages, parking expenses or grocery bills, for example, while their child is undergoing treatment for cancer.
“When we hear that a mom has to stop working to care for her child, that’s when we really want to step in and help,” Jill said.
In addition to administering the family foundation, Jill owns the Purple Bear, a toy store in Guilford. She is also a board member for Camp Rising Sun, a camp for children with cancer in Colebrook, Conn. that is staffed by a volunteer medical staff including Dr. Joe McNamara, a pediatric hemolotogist/oncologist at Smilow Cancer Center at Yale New-Haven Hospital. Rachel is a volunteer counselor at Camp Rising Sun.
Yvette and Arthur Eder were married for more than 60 years. During that time Arthur opened Eder Brothers Inc. with his brother Sydney in 1933. Eder Brothers is a wholesale distributor of wine and spirits based in West Haven.
